De reis van de Beagle

De herfst diende zich aan met wind en regenvlagen bij het Twentekanaal. De waard van het stille café keek over het water naar de sierlijke brug. Hij kon zijn ogen niet geloven: daar kwam een zeilschip met de naam 'Beagle'en het ging aanleggen bij tegenover het café. Darwin, schoot het door hem heen, hier in Kleindochteren!? In zijn opwinding liet hij een dienblad met bierglazen uit zijn morsige handen vallen en beende naar buiten. Zou het dan toch waar zijn dat hier in deze gemeente de oorsprong van alle soorten en mogelijk zelfs de mens te vinden zou zijn? Opeens voorzag hij een grote toeloop naar zijn café en ging schielijk weer naar binnen om de scherven op te ruimen voordat zijn vaste klandizie kwam. In de spiegel achter de tap bekeek hij zijn brede kaken, platte neus en diepliggende ogen onder een vooruitstekende schedel en voelde een lichte trots over zijn nederige afstamming uit dat mooie Duitse dal. De jukebox kreeg de opdracht het nummer Bottle van ene Guy K te spelen.

Darwin Dub

Vandaag tweehonderd jaar geleden werd Charles Darwin geboren. Dat heeft een boel gedonder gegeven, zoals in Dover, Pennsylvania, waar zijn leer een onderwijsverbod kreeg om 'constitutionele redenen'. Reden om in de jukebox het nummer 'Dub fi Dover' te draaien en de dag door te brengen in zware basdreunen en dikke rookwolken. De waard denkt dat Andries Knevel nog langs komt en neuriet de 'lyrics' mee in zijn slechte Engels:
